Tour of Duty

On September the 11th 2001, the world watched as one, in shock, as a series of coordinated suicide attacks were launched upon the United States. A total of 411 emergency service workers lives were taken as they responded to the scene. The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) lost 343 Fire-fighters. The New York City Police Department lost 23 officers. The Port Authority Police Department lost 37 officers, and 8 additional Emergency Medical Paramedics from Private Emergency Medical Support units were killed. The Tour of Duty Run is a journey that will end in New York City, early on the morning of September 11 2010.

In 2010, Australian and American Firefighters, with their colleagues, will run from Los Angeles to New York, finishing at the World Trade Center site to commemorate 9/11. The route will pass through Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Arizona, Albuquerque, Oklahoma, Houston, New Orleans, Mississippi, Memphis, St. Louis, Chicago, Washington, Baltimore, Pennsylvania and New York. Each dawn of the 31-day journey will be dedicated to the individuals whose lives were tragically taken in their tour of duty. Funds raised will be donated to charities nominated by the Firefighters and Emergency Services of America.

The fire-fighters and emergency service workers of America and Australia will come together as allies to remember our fallen colleagues, our brothers and sisters, our family.

Jerry Lewis has gracefully agreed to be the US Ambassador of The Tour Of Duty. Jerry, has had a long and successful career as a comedian, actor, film producer, writer, film director and singer. Jerry is also the US national chairman of the Muscular Dystrophy Association and was recently in Australia promoting his charity and spent time in Melbourne and Sydney with Vic and NSW firefighters.
Despite all this hectic activity, Jerry gives the appearance of being ageless. Six feet in height (184cm), around 170 lb. (77kg), hazel eyes and black hair. He has five sons: Gary, Ron, Scott, Chris and Anthony, seven grandchildren, and one great granddaughter, thanks to his granddaughter Sara Jane Spence.
Jerry has a proud relationship with US firefighters. Jerry has been an active fund raiser for many charities and is thrilled to be associated with The Tour of Duty and the 'firefighter fellowship'. Jerry will be waiting in Las Vegas and we are looking forward to shaking his hand.
1977 marked the year that the highest honor ever bestowed upon an entertainer, would recognize the tireless efforts Jerry Lewis has displayed since 1949, in his fight against Muscular Dystrophy. "Jerry Lewis is a man for all seasons, all people, all times. His name has, in the hearts of millions, become synonymous with peace, love and brotherhood." With those words, Congressman Les Aspin of Wisconsin concluded his nomination of Jerry Lewis for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Jerry Lewis has a motto that reflects more than anything else his ongoing love affair with humanity: "I shall pass through this world but once. Any good, therefore, that I can do or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer nor neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again!"

A FIRE FIGHTER’S DREAM

His voice boomed like a beacon and it echoed in my soul

From the land of opportunity, reverberations roll

All across the mighty sea to where the Southern Cross stars gleam

I was listening…and I heard it…when he said…I have a dream…

And the dream I had was beautiful – what more could someone pray

Than to wake up in the magic of a perfect summer’s day?

An aqua blue-like canopy pays tribute to the skies

And there I see this young kid with a hero in his eyes

The hero is a humble man and not the type to shirk

A proudly spoken fire-fighter on his way to work

His profession is his passion, his adrenalin, his spark

The hat he wears to battle is his way to make a mark

And waving from a window, now the boy begins to cry

You see the hero is his father…and he hates to say goodbye

And the dream I had was terrible, from nowhere they appear

Monsters in the New York sky that choke the day with fear

It can’t be real – the questions burn with why and who and how?

Go and turn your TV on…please…just do it now…

An evil cloak in plumes of smoke replaces freedom’s gown

The flames reveal their tragic truth – the world is falling down

Falling, sprawling, screaming, calling, crying as they go

A fire fighter grabs his hat and flies to meet his foe

Forward into battle now – he hears a church’s bell

Forward into no man’s land - Forward into hell

And the dream I had was powerful – the best of humankind

Courage is a heartfelt word not easily defined

It doesn’t equal ‘fearless’ as some sideline experts claim

No…courage is ‘to be scared…but to go on just the same’

To rally in the moment then to rise up through the stairs

To save as many people as an act of courage dares

To dig and dig then dig some more – to be there for your mates

To look your leader in the eye and know the end awaits

Underneath the carnage, when the count is done and said

The only thing recovered is his hat of ‘firey’ red

And the dream I had was personal – I’ve put my kids to sleep

But the images still haunt me and reality cuts deep

I see the faces of the fallen – the tape forever runs

I see the mothers and the brothers and the sisters and the sons

And the comrades and the colleagues, they are never to return

But for every face, a candle…and tonight, that flame will burn

It burns for something precious – something every hero gave

It illuminates ‘ground zero’ and commemorates the brave

Of religion, race and rivalry, it burns across that scope

It is pure in its simplicity – tonight, it burns for hope

Yes the dream we share IS hopeful in our darkest hour of hours

Beams of light now kiss the sky where, once, we saw two towers

Of this, be strong and steadfast - Of this, stand tall and say -

There are some things that an enemy can never take away

I can feel it through the flag that flies, defiant in the gloom

I can see it through the window where a boy waits in his room

He is waiting for his hero, still, to walk back through that door

The hat he holds is scuffed and scratched but this, he knows for sure

One day he will wear that hat and pride will reign supreme

Because his father’s gift was freedom and for that…he has a dream…

It’s humbling to receive so many kind wishes on our company’s 40th birthday. I’ve lived nearly all my life in Ipswich and it’s home to me. Along with my wife Joan, we have been on the receiving end of over 40 years of support from the Ipswich people and have always enjoyed giving back, especially to members of our community who have not been as fortunate as others. We have a great team of people here at the dealership who also enjoys helping our great city. The success of our company has been a team effort and I am very grateful for the support.

September 2006, - vale Steve Irwin

THE CROCODILES ARE CRYING

Endless visions fill my head – this man – as large as life, And instantly my heart mourns for his angels and his wife

Because the way I see Steve Irwin – just put everything aside, It comes back to his family – it comes back to his pride

His animals inclusive – Crikey – light the place with love!, Shine his star with everything he fought to rise above

The crazy-man of Khaki from the day he left the pouch, Living out his dream and in that classic ‘Stevo’ crouch

Exploding forth with character and redefining cheek, It’s one thing to be honored as a champion unique

It’s one thing to have microphones and spotlight cameras shoved, It’s another to be taken in and genuinely loved

But that was where he had it right – I guess he always knew, From his fathers’ modest reptile park and then Australia Zoo

We cringed at times and shook our heads – but true to natures call, There was something very Irwin in the make up of us all

Yes the more I care to think of it – the more he had it right, If you’re going to make a difference – make it big and make it bright!

Yes - he was a lunatic! Yes - he went head first!, But he made the world feel happy with his energetic burst

A world so large and loyal that it’s hard to comprehend, I doubt we truly count the warmth until life meets an end

To count it now I say a prayer with words of inspiration, May the spotlight shine forever on his dream for conservation

…My daughter broke the news to me – my six year old in tears, It was like she’d just turned old enough to show her honest fears

I tried to make some sense of it but whilst her Dad was trying, His little girl explained it best…she said “The crocodiles are crying”

Their best mate’s up in heaven now – the crocs up there are smiling!, And as sure as flowers, poems and cards and memories are piling

As sure as we’ll continue with the trademarks of his spiel, Of all the tributes worthy – he was rough…but he was real

As sure as ‘Crikey!’ fills the sky, I think we’ll miss ya Steve…goodbye
